Mosman Cup a roaring success

An early-afternoon downpour failed to dampen the competitive spirit of nearly 800 children aged six to 12 who, despite being soaked and muddied, competed for five team titles in the first-ever Mosman Cup last Saturday at the Nomad Sports Club in Paranaque.

Two football clubs and three schools won titles, with International School of Manila beating Holistic Education Center in a shootout after regulation play ended in a deadlock for the 12-and-under title in the boys division.

The Nomads Junior Football Club edged Union Football Club 1-0 to bag the 10-and-under championship also in the boys’ class.

In the girls’ division, Miriam College defeated Saint Pedro Poveda for the 12-and-under title while Holistic Education Center won the title in the 10-and-under category over Saint Pedro Poveda.
The mixed eight-and-under title was won by Union Football Club 2-0 over Nomads Junior Football Club.
Third placers were Paref Southridge School in the boys’ 12-under, International School Manila (boys 10-under), Xavier School and Union Football Club in the girls 12-under, Philippine Christian Foundation-Batang May Laban in the girls 10-under, and Ateneo de Manila University in the mixed under-eight division.

Named best players were International School’s Adilet Segizerov in the boys 12-under, Nomads’ Sean Christianson in the boys 10-under, Miriam’s Nowa Amonclo in the girls 12-under, Holistic’s Ice Cedro in the girls 10-under, and Union’s Clarence Limchiko in the mixed eight-under.

Top scorer awards went to International School’s Tomoya Kobayashi and Jake Vought in the boys 12-under, Nomads’ Matthew Custodio in the boys 10-under, Miriam’s Bea Velasco in the girls 12-under, Holistic’s Nicole Salvador in the girls 10-under, and Union’s Ken Diaz in the mixed eight-under.
A total of 57 teams from various schools and football clubs, including four teams from a small school near Smokey Mountain in Tondo, competed in the one-day knockout tournament organized by Mosman Communications and sanctioned by the Philippine Football Federation.

The Tondo team played under the banner of the Philippine Christian Foundation-Batang May Laban.
Highlighting the awarding rites was an audio-visual presentation on the work being done by PCF, a non-stock, non-profit, non-government organization that runs education, nutrition, health, and livelihood programs for families in the Smokey Mountain area.

Mosman Cup inaugural turns out a success

Some 800 children basked in the heat of competition and ignored the murky aftermath of an afternoon rain as the first Mosman Cup got under way Saturday at the Nomad Sports Club in Parañaque City.

The children, aged six to 12, vied for five team titles in the tournament’s inaugural staging.

International School Manila defeated Holistic Education Center in a shootout after regulation play ended in a deadlock for the boys’ under-12 championship. Paref Southridge School placed third.

Miriam College (girls’ under 12), Nomads FC (boys’ under 10), and Holistic (girls’ under 10) also won in their respective groups. Also, Union FC beat Nomads to win the mixed under-eight division.

A total of 57 teams from various schools and football clubs, including four teams from small school near Smokey Mountain in Tondo, competed in the one-day knockout tournament organized by Mosman Communications and sanctioned by the Philippine Football Federation.

Jane Walker, chief executive officer of Philippine Christian Foundation (PCF), one of the supporters of the event, said she was “happy” with the turnout of the event. Walker added that she saw the equality of all the players coming from different walks of life through football.

“It was a level playing field,” Walker said. “They have been children in this event. They had much fire in their eyes. I can’t tell you how much it means to be part of this tournament.”

A nonstock, nonprofit, nongovernment organization, PCF received donations, including books, school supplies, and a motorized bike for their school. It currently educates 857 children of various ages in Tondo, football being a part of its curriculum.

Meanwhile, named best players were International School’s Adilet Segizerov in the boy’s 10-under, Miriam’s Nowa Amonclo in the girls 12-under, Holistic’s Ice Cedro in the girls 10-under, and Union’s Clarence Limchiko in the mixed eight-under.

Top-scorer awards went to International School’s Tomoya Kobayashi and Jake Vought in the boys 12-under, Nomads’ Matthew Custodio (boys’ under-10), Miriam’s Bea Velasco(girls’ under 12), Holistic’s Nicole Salvador (girls’ under-10), and Union’s Ken Diaz(mixed under eight).

In the boys’ under 12, Union FC finished second and International School Manila was third.
